The dealer where w purchased the range hood did not have a working model for us to examine so we ordered from their catalog after reviewing the Broan website.
The four 50 watt halogen lights get hot enough to cook raw meat if you place it on top of your stove. Our previous range hood used incandescent bulbs which got hot but not as hot as the halogens. The Broan hood has settings which will lower the lights (and thus heat).
The lights in our old hood were sufficient to fully light the stove area and the "spill" over into the kitchen area. This gave us enough light to do many kitchen chores without turning on additional lighting. The Broan lights are highly directional and don't spill over into the kitchen - unless they are turned up high - then here comes the heat. I tried using lower wattage halogen bulbs but did not resolve my issues.
The control panel for the various range hood settings is a little tricky to master at first but if you carefully follow the directions and practice it a couple of times it becomes easy. For the younger generation who have mastered their dvd and blu ray players the range settings will be a snap.
My wife likes that the removable grease filters are dishwasher safe and easily removed.
She also likes that the fan speed is automatically variable depending upon cooking conditions.
The unit looks great and seems well made. You might have to temporarily take a part time job to pay for it but like everything else you get what you pay for and we are pleased that we got this model.
Yes, I recommend this product.

can you turn auto fan off?

According to the info below you cannot turn off the auto fan feature. It has a mind of its own.

1) If the fan is ON it will cycle up and down to deal with the temp.

2) If the fan is off, (CANADIAN VERSION DOES NOT HAVE
THIS FUNCTION) the Heat Sentry system will automatically turn
the fan on to its highest speed when the temperature is above
normal. When the Heat Sentry system is on, the light above the
high speed fan button will flash on and off. After the temperature
has lowered to normal, the fan speed will be reduced until the
temperature has stabilized, then the fan will turn off.

How to turn display back on.

Display is now off and I can't seem to turn it back on. I think I set -d- to off and -s- to off. Also no indicator lights, but fan and light settings work. How to turn display (clock, etc) on from this condition?
Here is a possible solution.

The hood fan must be off to activate and access the feature menu.

With the fan off you need press the shaded clock button and then step through the clock settings. After you have set the minutes you need to press the shaded clock button again to enter the Display mode settings and use the + or - buttons to toggle the (d on) LED screen.

See page 3 of the instruction manual to review this process. It only took me a day to get really comfortable with the way the Feature menu works.

why does much of the exhaust air come back through the front of the unit ?

qp3 36" unit
Did you install the unit or did you have someone else install the range hood?

A possible answer to your question is that the unit comes to be installed as a ducted range hood. If you are going to use it as a non-ducted hood then you need to attach the Non-Duct Diverter to the Air Box. See steps 12 - steps 15 on page 7 of the instructiion manual.

Doesn't seem to suck up much air and feels like a lot of air is coming out around the lights somehow..

Just doesn't seem to work very well not sure if this is normal. It isn't vented outside but I had hoped it would work better...

How do you turn off the lights? They automatically turn on at night.

The unit comes with the ambient light sensor set to level 1 ON. This is the default.

If you follow the directions on page 3 of your manual
Clock settings > Display > Sleep Mode > Ambient Light Sensor
then you will be able to change the Light Sensor to (AoFF).

We had the same issue when the unit was first installed and it took us maybe a day to master the settings. Too bad that the installer did not run through the settings with us before he left.
